Dental Exams Q&A

What are dental exams?

Dental exams are evaluations of your teeth, gums, and soft tissues performed by both a dentist and dental hygienist. Dentists are specially trained for oral health care while dental hygienists are trained to help patients maintain clean teeth and good oral health habits.

Dentists and hygienists evaluate your mouth through a dental exam to search for gum disease, tooth decay, or other oral health problems at a stage when they are easiest to treat. During a dental exam, the hygienist also educates you on how to best care for your teeth and gums to prevent future oral health problems.

How often do I need dental exams?

You should get a dental exam twice a year, about every six months. If you have bleeding or swollen gums, known as gingivitis, or other gum disease, you should visit the dentist more often. Dental exams help prevent periodontitis, a serious gum disease that leads to infection and tooth loss.

What should I expect during a dental exam?

Dental exams at EZ Dental consists of a thorough cleaning by the hygienist, checkup of your mouth by the dentist, and X-rays if needed. During the cleaning, the hygienists use small, metal tools to scrape your teeth and remove plaque and tartar. An electric toothbrush brushes your teeth and then the hygienist flosses between your teeth. Fluoride may be applied to help prevent tooth decay.

If needed, X-rays are taken to reveal cavities, gum disease, or other problems that can’t be seen with a visual inspection.

Your dentist examines your X-rays and inspects your mouth for signs of problems or cavities. If needed, appointments for restorative dentistry are scheduled to repair damaged teeth or lasers are utilized to remove infections along the gum line. Your dentist also examines how your top teeth fit with your bottom teeth and may suggest Invisalign®️ services or refer you to an orthodontist if there are any concerns.
