Gum Surgery Q & A

What is gum surgery?

Gum surgery refers to several treatments for periodontal or gum disease. These procedures can:

  • Eliminate bacteria from beneath your gums
  • Improve your oral hygiene
  • Reshape the bones that support your teeth
  • Prevent additional damage

If your gums are red and swollen, or they bleed whenever you brush and floss, don’t wait to contact the caring team at EZ Dental.

Who can benefit from gum surgery?

The team at EZ Dental typically recommends gum surgery for people with advanced or severe gum disease.

Early on, gum disease doesn’t always present obvious symptoms. As the condition progresses, telltale signs include loose teeth, pain when chewing, bad breath, and receding gums.

During your initial consultation, your dentist conducts a comprehensive oral exam, assessing the health of your gums and jaw. If they determine you’ll benefit from gum surgery, they develop a custom treatment plan.

What are the types of gum surgery?

The team at EZ Dental offers several types of gum surgery, including:

Flap surgery

During flap surgery, your dentist carefully lifts a section of gum tissue and removes the tartar and bacteria underneath. Afterward, they suture your gums tightly around your teeth, preventing further recession.

Guided tissue regeneration

If you’ve lost gum or bone tissue due to periodontal disease, the team might recommend guided tissue regeneration. During this type of gum surgery, your dentist inserts a small piece of mesh between your jaw and gums. The mesh encourages your bone and supportive tissue to fuse together, providing a supportive foundation for your teeth.

Soft tissue graft

If you have severely receding gums, your dentist might recommend a tissue graft. During this procedure, your dentist removes a small piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth. They suture the piece of tissue around an area of receding gums, preventing further damage.

What is recovery like following gum surgery?

Following gum surgery, it’s normal to experience some mild bleeding, swelling, and increased sensitivity. Take at least 24 hours off of work and make sure to get plenty of rest. Follow your dentist’s recovery instructions, take your medication as prescribed, and avoid smoking.

For the first week, eat soft foods like scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, or soup. In addition, your dentist might ask you to avoid brushing or flossing certain areas of your mouth until they’ve fully healed.
