Teeth Whitening Q&A

What causes discolored teeth?

Your lifestyle, including your diet, affects the color of your teeth over time. Tooth enamel is a porous surface, meaning it holds stains from dark colored foods, beverages and other substances. Over time, teeth take on a yellowed appearance due to many lifestyle choices, but it is possible to lighten and restore their color with cosmetic teeth whitening services.

Teeth discoloration is caused by:

  • Inadequate oral hygiene practices
  • Smoking
  • Drinking red wine, cola, and coffee
  • Eating dark-colored berries like blueberries and blackberries
  • Excessive fluoride use
  • Certain prescription medications

The body’s natural aging process contributes to yellow teeth, too. The enamel on our teeth becomes thinner, allowing the darker colored inside part of your tooth to show through. While natural, it’s an unwelcome sign of aging.

Am I a candidate for teeth whitening?

Not everyone can get their teeth whitened. If you’re over 16 years old and have healthy gums, you’re likely a good candidate for teeth whitening. Your dentist determines if you can whiten your teeth with an exam.

If you have a lot of dental fillings, you should not get your teeth whitened, as the dental filling material doesn’t respond to whitening gel the same way natural teeth do. It’s also not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

If you have extremely sensitive teeth, you should avoid teeth whitening as the hydrogen peroxide may cause discomfort or pain.

How does tooth whitening work?

At EZ Dental, your dentist first cleans your teeth, completes a dental exam, and takes X-rays to ensure you can safely have your teeth whitened. If all is well, a tooth whitening gel containing hydrogen peroxide is applied to your teeth with special lights to break up stains and penetrate your teeth.

Your gums and lips are protected with a plastic tray while your dentist applies the whitening gel. The process takes about an hour and you’ll leave the office with brighter, whiter teeth and a smile you can’t wait to show off!
